HVAC Technicians Can Take Online HVAC Training and Certification Courses
The demand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians is growing at a much faster rate than the demand for jobs in general, and is expected to continue at that pace until at least 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Not only are HVAC jobs plentiful now, they also pay well. The typical technician who is trained and has had at least a few years of experience can earn just over $20 an hour. Apprentice technicians just starting their careers earn somewhat less, and highly trained and experienced technicians can earn substantially higher wages.
Basic HVAC training usually is done in high school technical programs, post-high school technical schools or during military service. Once a technician has completed his training, he frequently begins work assisting an experienced HVAC technician. After he’s worked with an experienced technician for at one year, more often two or more years, he can take hvac certification tests that will assess his knowledge and experience on various HVAC systems. Industry standards require that a technician be certified if he is to install or service HVAC units. Also, a certified HVAC
technician can earn higher wages.
Online HVAC Training Opportunities
Many technicians look for online hvac training and certification opportunities. Online training and certification can be done at the technician’s pace, and often cost less than training in traditional programs. Training programs take between six months and two years. There are a number of online educational websites that offer HVAC training and certification programs. In addition, some traditional universities with HVAC programs provide online options as well.
A typical online training program encompasses between 12 and 16 separate sections of study on various aspects of the HVAC industry. An online program usually includes a basic overview of the industry, safety issues, types of heating and air conditioning units, electrical systems, refrigeration and building management. Technicians can also pursue specialized training in such areas as home inspections, automotive service, manufacturing plant operations and green fuels.
Online courses make use of a number of different methods to teach HVAC topics. These can include online reading assignments, training videos, quizzes, handouts that can be printed and similar training plans.
No mandatory national, industry-wide certification exams exist that HVAC technicians are required to take. Individual states instead monitor their own HVAC industry. However, certification is recognized as proof that a technician is proficient in the various areas of HVAC maintenance and installation. The industry offers certification in several different areas.
Online HVAC Training Exams And Programs
Basic competency exams, or entry-level exams, are usually given when a technician completes his initial training program. Subsequent exams can show the technician’s experience level and knowledge about specific areas of HVAC service and installation. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Refrigerant Handlers Certification Exam is one such example. Other types of certification exams include competency tests for home and commercial installation and service, and the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) exams that measure a technician’s level of expertise in basic as well as specialized areas.
Someone interested in pursuing training as a HVAC technician should choose the school he trains with very carefully. It’s best that he do some research before immediately enrolling in a training program. He can check a school’s reputation online, but it’s probably best that he talk with experienced HVAC technicians in his area. They’ll be able to steer him to the school that will help him get the training he needs for this career with almost limitless opportunities.
